Try an 'Exercise Snack'! - January 31, 2021

Let's face it. It can be challenging to get your exercise in these days.

Maybe you used to go to the rec center to play pickleball or to the pool for a swim, and now you find yourself struggling to leave the house. The cold winter weather doesn't help matters either!

Let's take a look on the bright side though, all this time at home makes it fairly easy to fit short bursts of activity into your day. Instead of setting aside an hour to go to the rec center you can now get small bits of exercise throughout the day and still see great health benefits.

We call these "Exercise Snacks"!

Exercise snacks are simply brief bouts of exercise spread throughout the day, and can last for mere seconds to several minutes. Many scientific studies show that exercise snacking several times a day can lead to meaningful improvements in physical fitness & overall health. One specific study even found that even just 4 second bursts of exercise have been shown to yield fitness improvements!

Challenge yourself to a week of exercise snacks!

Try one of more of these fun exercise challenges to add in short exercise snacks throughout your day.

- Add exercise to your phone calls

- Add music & movement to your work breaks

- Follow a quick exercise routine when you feel restless (like the one below!)

This routine was created for beginners, elderly people, or anyone with an injury that keeps them from getting down to the floor or back up. If you find the workout too difficult, start with just one or two exercises and more when you feel ready. If you aren't a fan of one of the exercises, feel free to modify it or switch it out for something else. The great part about this routine is that you can perform it at whatever intensity you feel works best for you.
